FLASHBACK: Dave and Virginia Grohl on ‘The Late Show’

In honor of Mother’s Day this weekend, we remember this great chat with Dave Grohl and his mom

Virginia Grohl, the mother of Dave Grohl, is in the middle of promoting her new book From Cradle to Stage: Stories from the Mothers Who Rocked and Raised Rock Stars and appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert for a funny and poignant interview alongside her son.

A myriad of topics were covered from Virginia’s support of Dave dropping out of high school to pursue a career in music to Virginia coming out on tour, but the most intriguing topic discussed was how both mother and son coped after the sudden death of Kurt Cobain.

Of course, Dave can’t appear on a talk show and not play a little music. Right after the interview, Dave ran across the stage to jam with house band Jon Batiste & Stay Human and the visiting Preservation Hall Jazz Band. (Like we’d expect anything less.)

Erica Banas is a news blogger who's been covering the rock/classic rock world since 2014. The coolest event she's ever covered in person was the 2021 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. (Sir Paul McCartney inducting Foo Fighters? C'mon now!) She's also well-versed in etiquette and extraordinarily nice. #TransRightsAreHumanRights
