After a massive promotional push, the Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody debuted at number one at the box office with a big opening weekend.
Per BoxOfficeMojo.com, the film grossed $50 million in the U.S. in its opening weekend, which combined with the current gross in the U.K. and other world markets brings the film’s worldwide gross to $141 million. All of this is fantastic news for 20th Century Fox, who estimated an U.S. opening weekend gross of $35-40 million and who made the film for $52 million, according to ABC News.
The film was anchored by the incredible performance by Rami Malek as Mercury, who has been garnering a lot of Oscar buzz for his portrayal of the Queen frontman. Of course, we still have a long way until January 22, 2019 when Academy Award nominations are announced, so fingers crossed for Malek!
