With the sad news of Fred Willard’s passing, we flashback to our in studio interview with the comedy legend from 2009 [gallery]:
Read through this endless list of comedians paying tribute to their friend and hero:
I'm at a loss for words, a state Fred Willard never found himself in. My friend for 40+ years, a great comic actor who had no competition because there was only one of him. We were all so lucky. Goodbye, Fred.
Just learned of Fred Willard's passing. Just about the funniest human ever to walk the planet. An amazing talent, in telekinetic contact with the very wellspring of comedy.
RIP, Fred. You were always my comic hero. I was thrilled to work with you in Roxanne. https://t.co/IjSxCMESzt
As more and more people call and talk to Chris about Fred, this with Catherine makes me smile. Waiting for Guffman - "Midnight at the Oasis" - Auditions https://t.co/xIBs7tIpVz via @YouTube
Easily one of the funniest, nicest people I've ever met. Thank you for decades of laughter Fred. https://t.co/PcwoB8B7sn
God bless you, Fred Willard. You sure did make us laugh. #ripfredwillard
Fred Willard - RIP to a wonderfully original actor comedian - Any time he appeared in anything I'd stop and watch smiling and laughing - https://t.co/lJ82S7GZnU
Nobody funnier than #FredWillard. And when he happened to be in an audience, nobody laughed harder. Just saw him before quarantine & already miss him. He was my biggest fan and I am his. Fred & Mary were so kind to me.
Fred Willard was the funniest person that I've ever worked with. He was a sweet, wonderful man.
Rest In Peace sweet @Fred_Willard. You will always be a true original and I am so honored that our lives intersected. No one will ever come close to replacing your genius.
It was a privilege to have the great Fred Willard know my name. Rest In Peace Fred. You were funny in your bones.
We were fortunate to have worked with the hilarious Fred Willard on several episodes of Sister, Sister. His comedy chops were unbeatable. We'll miss you, friend. ???? https://t.co/jHxoi4DqVg
Fred Willard could not have been funnier. He was pure joy. And the sweetest person you could ever meet. https://t.co/JoLy6PVd9d
Has anyone stolen a whole movie so completely than when Fred Willard appears in the last 30 minutes of 'Best In Show'? So sublimely and infectiously silly. A high point in everything he appeared, a true comedy legend. https://t.co/GYaWeJNOiP
There is nobody funnier than Fred Willard. Every time he was on screen I got excited and he never disappointed. Every time I saw him in real life he was kind and generous. Watching him in Fernwood Tonight, Spinal Tap, Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show and all of his other film...
My heart is heavy at the news of #FredWillard's passing. What a kind man and what a glorious talent. There was no one funnier on earth. My family was lucky to be welcomed into his orbit. He and his wife Mary were superb hosts-generous to a fault. Can't believe they're both gone.
You could always hear our staff & crew laughing loudly when Fred Willard was in the building. It was an honor to work with him. We'll miss him very much. ????????
I had the distinct privilege to spend some time with Fred Willard on a few occasions. An amazingly nimble mind with a one of a kind perspective. His talent was only second to his warmth, generosity and kindness. #RIPFredWillard
Fred Willard. The dear hilarious kind man we just lost. Here am I with he and Martin Mull while shooting a documentary about Martin. Seeing them having fun together reminiscent of the Fernwood days was truly a joy. Rest In Peace dear Fred.
Fred Willard was one of the funniest men ever to live and one of the nicest. I'm deeply sad that he is gone but at least now the rest of us can move up in the rankings. Bye Fred. Give my love to Mary.
Rest in peace to the beautiful and beloved Fred Willard
RIP Fred Willard ..you were incomparable
We just interviewed Fred Willard over the phone for our radio show. It aired Monday. He told some great stories. Sorry to hear he's passed. He was so funny. #RIP
Just last week Fred himself paid tribute to his friend, Jerry Stiller:
I met him in the 60s when we played in the same clubs in The Village as he and Anne Meara. Unfortunately for us, they were much funnier! We couldn't be jealous, so we became good friends instead. #JerryStiller
