Green Day has amassed plenty of hits over the years, but there’s one popular song in particular that surprised Billie Joe Armstrong when it blew up.

In a new interview with Kerrang!Armstrong said he thought fans weren’t going to take to “Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life).”

“Doing something like Good Riddance was terrifying for me, to put myself out there and be that vulnerable,” said Armstrong. “I thought people were probably gonna f—ing hate it, you know? But I think the way that it resonated with people, I was able to kind of go, ‘Okay, now I’ve really accomplished something that was a shift.’ And, as an artist, I felt more empowered that I could keep doing my thing without having to feel like I had to please everybody.”

He then playfully added, “It’s important to never give people what they want; you give people what they don’t know they want.”

Certainly gives a whole new meaning to, “It’s something unpredictable, but in the end it’s right,” doesn’t it?
