WWE Releases Samoa Joe, Billie Kay, Peyton Royce & More
WWE stunned fans today with the announcement of a number of talent releases including Samoa Joe, Billie Kay and Peyton Royce.
In a statement to their website today, WWE said, “WWE has come to terms on the release of Samoa Joe, Billie Kay, Peyton Royce, Mickie James, Chelsea Green, Tucker, Kalisto, Bo Dallas and Wesley Blake as of today April 15, 2021. We wish them the best in all of their future endeavors.”
The news of today’s releases comes a year to the day after WWE made headlines for a mass number of releases of talent and other backstage figures that is now know as “Black Wednesday.” I'm told John Laurinaitis has been making the calls to talent and citing budget cuts as the reason for the WWE releases
Wrestling Twitter had a lot of thoughts and opinions on these releases and what the future holds for these wrestlers. Shortly after the news broke, “Samoa Joe” became the number one trend on Twitter. Here are some notable comments from fans, wrestling media and other wrestlers.

The fact that Samoa Joe never became a World Champion in WWE is an absolute shame.

Samoa Joe has proven himself as one of the most versatile performers both in ring, on the mic, on commentary, everywhere. I'm in absolute disbelief.

Samoa Joe was other worldly on the mic. Not putting the Universal title on him was a huge mistake. pic.twitter.com/xuvZEK6hc9

To everyone released today: I'm sorry & it must be a huge shock that I can't even imagine. But you likely have lots of friends in other companies. When the time is right (and legally allowable, read your fine print!), don't be strangers.

I hope everyone lands on their feet. ❤

When you think about what's lacking from the WWE roster - women's tag teams, challengers for both women's titles, challengers for both men's top titles - if today's releases had instead been signings they would have filled a lot of holes.
