That's just the beginning of the praise from Hollywood's biggest comedians. Albert Brooks called him "a brilliant comedy actor" while Ben Stiller similarly noted "so incredibly funny. He knew how to do so little so brilliantly."
What was it about Charles that made him so wonderful? His delivery, his humor, the appreciation other comedians had for him - he was the full package. If you are not familiar with his career, or you are looking to celebrate him this week, Steve Morrison put together a list of his favorite Charles Grodin movies to get you started:
Midnight Run
An accountant (Charles Grodin) is chased by bounty hunters, the F.B.I., and the mafia after jumping bail. The chemistry between Grodin and DeNiro is terrific!
Heaven Can Wait
Grodin serves in a supporting role, but is hilarious in this story involving a quarterback who is accidentally pulled out of his body by an overzealous angel resulting in a bizarre game of soul shifting Tetris. Oh, the great James Mason is in it as well.
The Lonely Guy
Steve Martin plays Larry Hubbard a newly “lonely guy.” He befriends another even more lonely lonely guy named Warren played by Grodin. This is a weird, bizarre, hilarious gem that not many people have seen, but those who have hold it in cult status.
The Heartbreak Kid
A breakout comedy role for Grodin who plays a man who finds Mrs. Right and marries her only then to find Mrs. Even More Right while still on his honeymoon. A classic that was remade years later with Ben Stiller.
Real Life
A parody of reality television before reality television from the great Albert Brooks. Charles Grodin plays Warren Yeager, patriarch of the Yeager family who are the subjects of a “Real World” style documentary about an “average family.” Grodin is at his best as the sad sack husband trying to keep his personal and professional life together.
