Let’s all say it together: this really stinks.

Wrexham AFC has called off their pre-season US Tour which would have included a stop in Chester, PA (USA) to play the Philadelphia Union. This means that owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds’ dream of bringing their team to play a game on US soil is postponed – for now.

Believe us, this was a hard decision for everyone involved. There had already been an infinite amount of hours spent on planning this event, so, pulling the plug did not happen without expending every resource first. In the end, it came down to safety. The press release from Wrexham AFC explains:

It is with significant regret that the Club has taken the decision not to travel to the United States for the game with the Philadelphia Union on July 29, 2021.

The Club have received significant assistance from both the Welsh Government and US Embassy to ensure the complex immigration requirements on both sides of the Atlantic could be satisfied, for which we were exceptionally grateful.

However, the increased risks and continued uncertainty created by COVID-19 have led the Club to make this decision, so as not to expose the players and staff to unnecessary risks that could have a negative impact on preparations for the new season.

We realise that this decision will be disappointing to fans of the Club, as well as those commercial partners who agreed to support the tour, and we apologise to all this decision affects.

Finally, to our new friends at the Philadelphia Union, we do hope to bring this game to fruition at some stage in the next 12 months and we wish you every success for the future.

We here at The Preston & Steve Show are honored to have met so many of passionate Wrexham AFC fans, stateside and abroad.  The banter and chirping back and forth was exquisite. It should never stop! Hopefully this game will be rescheduled for a future date which means this friendly rivalry between Wrexham and Chester(USA) needs to continue.

We look forward to hosting everyone in our beautiful city sometime down the line. In the meantime, please consider finding another way to support CORA Services and Philabundance, the local organizations which were going to be the beneficiaries of the game.
