Every year, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society nominates a group of community leaders to join their Man and Woman of the Year Campaign. The goal for each nominee is to raise as much money possible for the organization. In 2022, The Preston & Steve Show’s Nick McIlwain was nominated.

About the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society: they are enormously helpful to families who have been affected, directly and indirectly, by a variety of blood cancers, including leukemias, lymphomas and myelomas. They are also the largest nonprofit funder of blood cancer research to advance cures. LLS has invested over $1.5 billion in cancer research since 1949, and that research has directly led to breakthroughs in immunotherapy, genomics and medicines that are improving and saving the lives of patients.

Their mission is simple: end blood cancers. But, until that happens, families and patients are still affected by these diseases and LLS aims to help them in any way they can. All of the services that LLS provides to families are free, but in order to provide these services, they need fundraisers like their Man / Woman of the Year Campaign.

Enter Nick. His nephew, Luke, was diagnosed with Leukemia when he was only 4 years old. The good news is that Luke is now in remission and is doing great! He’s playing baseball and even taking acting lessons. After his diagnosis, LLS stepped in to help Nick’s family, including Luke’s younger brother, Tommy. LLS cares about the ENTIRE family, not just the patient dealing with the diagnosis. LLS made sure to take care of and look into the health and well-being of Adam (Luke’s dad), Jenny (Luke’s mom) and Tommy, too. They want you to know that you’re not alone and that despite of the diagnosis, you’re now in a community of people who want to help you get through it all.

The Man of the Year Campaign lasts ten weeks, and during that time, Nick and his team successfully collected more than any other candidate. As a result of his fundraising efforts, Nick was named the 2022 Man of the Year.

A message from Nick: “Thank you so much – I’m very happy to report that I’ve won the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s 2022 Man of the Year campaign! With your generous help, my team was able to raise nearly $70,000 and collectively, the Man and Woman Year Campaign was able to raise more than $360,000! Thank you to WMMR and the Preston & Steve Show for their support and generosity! Thanks to my brothers, Adam and Josh, and my parents, Tom & Betsy! Thanks to my nephews, Luke & Tommy (and their baby sister, Janie) for inspiring me in the first place! So happy to report that Luke is in remission and doing well!  I’m humbled and honored and incredibly grateful.”
