This year, The Preston & Steve Show will host their 25th Camp Out for Hunger food drive. To celebrate, they have a nostalgic event planned for Monday morning.
Over the past 25 years, the Camp Out has seen at least eight different Preston & Steve Show lineup changes, two different radio stations, four different parent companies and four different locations. Technically, the event has even had two different beneficiaries during the quarter decade.
The very first Camp Out For Hunger was the week after Thanksgiving in 1998. Preston Elliot, Marilyn Russell and Steve Morrison were set up in front of an RV in the parking lot of the Adam’s Mark hotel off City Ave. They broadcasted from the lot beginning on Monday morning, checked back in with the other Y100 DJs all day long, then Preston and Steve actually camped out in the RV all week long.
By Friday morning, PMS completed their goal of collecting 1 TON of food for the Philadelphia Food Bank. It was so successful that they did it again, and again, year after year. Twenty-four times to be specific!
If the nostalgia hasn’t set it yet, then enjoy these nuggets: The Adam’s Mark hotel shuttered in 2004. In 2005, the same year that The Preston & Steve Show moved to 93.3 WMMR, The Greater Philadelphia Food Band merged with Philabundance. 6ABC’s Cecily Tynan was a guest at the very first Camp Out and has been to every since one since. In 2021 the Camp Out For Hunger collected 2.3million pounds of food and $1.8 million dollars.
Though The Preston & Steve Show has seen many changes over the years, one thing cannot and will not ever change… that is the people who were there for the very first Camp Out For Hunger.
To celebrate the 25th anniversary, the show will host a reunion with the original Camp Out family! Tune in on Monday, November 7th at 8:20am as they welcome back Jim McGuinn, Bret Hamilton, Matt Cord, Leeann Curtis, Monkeyboy, Josh Landow, John Von, Kelly Gross, Patrick Schmidt, Kristin Miller and the rest of the Y100 crew!
Listeners are also welcome to come in person to watch the broadcast any day Monday, November 7th through Friday, November 11th. The Preston & Steve Show has lots of guests and stunts planned for the week. Their only ask is that everyone in attendance bring non-perishable food items to donate. Online donations will also be accepted, and ACME Markets will be on site selling groceries. Visit the Camp Out For Hunger main page for details.
