Saturday Hours Are Finally Back At Some Philly Libraries After 3 Years
It might not seem like many when Philadelphia has 54 branches in the Public Library System, but 10 of the library branches are offering Saturday Hours again. Hours are 10am to 5pm.
The Saturday hours will run through June 10th and then the library will examine what changes they can make to Saturday service and plan for additional weekend hours in the fall.
Branches will be closed April 8th for Easter weekend and May 27th for Memorial Day weekend.
Libraries are invaluable for not only books, but access to computers, newspapers, magzines and study time in a safe environment.
Saturday Hours were cut in 2018 when fewer than half of the libraries offered Saturday hours. There was a lack of funding. In 2019 there was a funding boost and Saturday hours were back for the school year. Then COVID.
Even now some libraries struggle to stay open on weekdays due to the lack of workers. Then came a major budget increase to stabilize the 5 day service. The budget increase helps hire new staff. Many staff members are volunteering to work overtime to make all of this happen as people are slowly hired. So say THANK YOU when you see them on Saturday.

The 10 libraries now open on Saturday are so that each council district has one location open.
