I wanted to play an album that was released today in 1984 for the Vinyl Cut: 'The Works' by Queen.

As is always the case, MMR played it when it was new. It contained some great songs. There are not as many hits on this one as some of the other Queen albums had, but side 1 song 1 was the radiant Radio Ga Ga.

That song became very iconic Live Aid moment that is still referenced today. Live Aid was was a benefit concert held on Saturday 13, July 1985, for those of you youngsters who may not know. A really cool part of it was that it was an all-day event with shows at Wembley Stadium in London and John F. Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia. I was there (in Philly, of course).

People were watching the concert in England on TV in the morning before heading over to the show in Philly. Queen's performance of Radio Ga Ga, the song that had just come out a year prior, was stellar. People were reaching their hands up to the sky and clapping in time with the song. It is probably my favorite version of the song.

'The Works' also features hits like Hammer to Fall and I Want to Break Free. It was the 11th album released by the band.

Happy birthday, 'The Works'!

From roughly 10:30am to somewhere around 3 (we call it Pierre Standard Time) weekdays Philadelphia rocks with (and loves) Pierre Robert on WMMR. Pierre Robert began his illustrious career at the pioneering progressive rock station KSAN, in his hometown San Francisco, but it’s through his uninterrupted 42-year tenure at Philadelphia‘s legendary WMMR that he’s made his mark. One of the city’s most recognizable celebrities will write about being at the center of its live music scene and greeting his legions of fans as if personal friends in the smallest clubs and largest stadiums.
