One Of These Bright Buttercream Bombs From Party Girl Bake Club Will Blow Your Mind
On a special Thursday edition of The Connoisseur, our chief foodie, Preston Elliot delivered a story to the gang about butter cream icing making a comeback. The headline was Fondant is dead. Welcome to Philly’s buttercream revival and the credit goes to the anti-fondant-hero, Steve Morrison, for bringing it to Preston’s attention.
A little background information, the entire Preston & Steve Show agrees with Steve’s fondant beliefs. It looks cool, but tastes lame. We wanna have cake and eat all of it too!
So how did this story end up with a Party Girl Bake Club cake in the studio? The article, which was written by Zoe Greenberg for The Philadelphia Inquirer, highlights a crew of very talented local bakers. When Preston reached the section about Party Girl, Marisa shouted, “OH MY GOD, I WANT ONE!” After she described the PGBC cakes, specifically her adventurous ingredients and fun vibe, everyone else suddenly understood too.
Fast forward to this morning, Mallory Valvano, the visionary behind the eccentric online only bakery, brought by this colorful work of art adorned with edible glitter cherries and layered with cornflake caramel clusters. The cake weighed at least 5 pounds and left everyone speechless.
What once started as a quarantine pop-up shop on Instagram has now spiraled into a “side hustle” for former chef Mallory Valvano. Mallory works as an event organizer as her day job, and she carefully prioritizes not overworking herself in her baking passion. She chooses to bake exactly 16 cakes each month with little wiggle room to change that number. Her cakes specialize in having a nostalgic decorating style and nearly perfect buttercream icing. It’s no wonder the baker won the 2022 “birthday cake to make you feel you are 14 again” and was highlighted in Philadelphia Magazine’s Best of Philly in 2022.
Her cakes are one of a kind, and she often tries to match a vibe in her baking art. But these unique cakes are a hot commodity, so make sure you check out her link to pre-order if you are interested in this link from her Instagram @partygirlbakeclub.
