PHILADELPHIA, PA. -- WMMR won Rock Station of the Year at the Marconi Awards, presented by the National Association of Broadcasters. The long-running Philadelphia institution accepted the award last night at a ceremony in New York City.

This is one of the highest honors in the radio industry. The NAB notes on its website that since 1989 the Marconis have been "given to radio stations and outstanding on-air personalities to recognize excellence in radio." The award is named for Nobel Prize winner Guglielmo Marconi, who invented the radio.

WMMR was last honored with this award in 2018, the year of the station's 50th anniversary. This year, the station's fellow nominees were KGLK in Houston, WIYY in Baltimore, WPLR in New Haven and WXTB in Tampa.

The win sends program director Bill Weston out on a high note. Weston, who’s been at the helm of WMMR for nearly two decades and also oversees its sister station WMGK, announced that he’ll be retiring at the end of this year. Current APD Chuck Damico will take over in 2024.

The Man About Town said in a note to staff: "I accepted Rock Station of the Year on behalf of the entire staff - the people who do all the work. I dedicated it to the people who have supported rock radio in Philadelphia for 55 years, our dear listeners."

WMMR first signed on air in Philadelphia in 1968, and is currently home to the top-rated Preston & Steve Show and legendary midday host Pierre Robert.

From roughly 10:30am to somewhere around 3 (we call it Pierre Standard Time) weekdays Philadelphia rocks with (and loves) Pierre Robert on WMMR. Pierre Robert began his illustrious career at the pioneering progressive rock station KSAN, in his hometown San Francisco, but it’s through his uninterrupted 42-year tenure at Philadelphia‘s legendary WMMR that he’s made his mark. One of the city’s most recognizable celebrities will write about being at the center of its live music scene and greeting his legions of fans as if personal friends in the smallest clubs and largest stadiums.
