Flashback: Preston & Steve Fell Under The Warning’s Spell (They’re Obsessed!)
The day September 21 is an interesting date in history. It’s crazy really: September 21st, 2024 will mark the 854th anniversary of the siege of Dublin at the hands of Anglo-Norman forces. Wild, isn’t it?
But who cares about that you nerd, September 21st, 2024 is the date for this year’s MMRBQ! Going down once again at Freedom Mortgage Pavillion Camden, New Jersey, this year’s MMRBQ is being headlined by The Offspring and Halestorm, featuring special guests Nothing More, The Warning, and P.O.D. There’ll also be sets from Silvertide, Sleep Theory, and MMR’s Local Shots Artist Jersey Calling.
These are all incredible groups, but right now we thought we’d focus on one in particular. Join us as we flashback to a set by The Warning on the Preston & Steve Show back on May 13th, 2022.
“That song was something you might hear in the intro of a James Bond movie.”
The Warning was the first musical performance on the Preston & Steve Show post-pandemic, and they did not disappoint. Sisters Alejandra, Daniela, and Paulina tore the house down with an acoustic rendition of their track “Money,” and also talked being noticed by Metallica and their relationship as sisters.
To put things into perspective on how paradoxically young and old the band is and was at the time of the interview, bassist Alejandra was a ten-year veteran of the music scene at 17 years old. What were you doing at 7 years old, picking your nose? The band got their first viral hit in 2014, with a Metallica cover posted by their parents that now has over 25 million views on YouTube. Drummer Paulina acknowledges this as truly starting their music careers. Metallica even got a whiff of it, and the band even had the chance in 2021 to contribute a re-recorded cover of Enter Sandman on the Blacklist album.
The sisters got to learning how to play music at a relatively young age. It was never a group thing, but Alejandra learning how to play bass made them realize that they could all play together. Even better, they get along great (less Gallagher Brother #1 bashing in Gallagher Brother #2’s head with a tambourine, more collaboration and love)! There may be fights over songwriting, but a middle ground can be reached. Honesty is their path, and it’s worked so far. Their relationship also helps them deal with creeps online. They protect each other, and they’re proud of what they’ve done.
The Warning finally perform “Money,” but with a special edition of drummer Paulina on vocals over guitarist Daniela.
“HEEEEEYYYYYYYY!”
The song was a hard rock banger: the guitar and the bass complementing each other well, lyrics challenging the business practices of the industry and the measures it forces artists to take, and Paulina displaying an incredible, soaring lung capacity. Like Michael Phelps, but if Michael Phelps was a tiny Mexican girl. Preston certainly couldn’t pull it off!
History has a way of cycling. At the time of the interview, The Warning was slated to go on tour with Halestorm. Now two years later, they’ll be playing once again with Halestorm at the 2024 MMRBQ. Watch the full interview below and then go and get your tickets!
