Herr's - Romano’s Stromboli winning chip bag

Thanks to Herr’s ‘Flavored By Philly’ Contest, 2024 was the Summer of the chip!

Since June, potato chip aficionados have been able to vote for their locally flavored Herr’s collaboration. The competitors were Talluto’s Cheese Ravioli and Marinara, and Mom Mom’s Kitchen Potato Pierogi, and Romano’s Stromboli.

We Have A Winner!

According to Herr’s, votes increased by over 50% over last year’s contest. 26,360 snack lovers shared their opinion and crowned a Delco Pizza Shop the champion.

Romano’s Stromboli Pizzeria and Italian Restaurant was selected the 2024 winner of Herr’s ‘Flavored by Philly’ contest. Their official flavor, Special Hot Stromboli blends the flavors of savory cheese with a touch of heat and spice.

The Essington, PA based pizzeria is the oldest family-owned and operated Italian Restaurant in Delaware County. Founded in 1944 by Nazzereno Romano, he is the original creator of the Stromboli. In 1949, he was experimenting with a new sandwich that was filled with meat, cheese and peppers, then rolled into a log and baked. It was eventually named “Stromboli” after the 1950 movie.

More Then Bragging Rights

A collaboration with Herr’s is a pretty cool prize alone, but there’s more! Romano’s Stromboli received $10,000 for their winning entry. The person who nominated them received $5,000. Runners-up, Talluto’s and Mom Mom’s Kitchen each receive $2,500 and their nominators were awarded $1,000.

Peter Romano, third generation owner of Romano’s Stromboli is excited and humbled that his cherished family recipe will be shared with snack enthusiasts everywhere. "As long-time fans of Herr's, we’re thrilled and grateful for this opportunity.”

The Herr's Flavored by Philly contest will return next year, so start thinking your nominations.

WMMR Logos Through the Years, 1968 to Now

Today (August 20th) is National Radio Day. WMMR is grateful to everyone who's been a part of this radio station in Phiiiil-aaaa-delphia since 1968: DJs, staffers, the artists we play, and of course, our listener family.

We're taking a closer look at those four letters today: W. M. M. R. Everything that rocks. You've heard it many times, but what has it looked like over the years?

Find out by scrolling through the gallery below. You'll see the evolution from the Metromedia days of the late '60s to a Barbie-pink moment in the '90s, plus our classic '80s lettering and our current look. (And if you like what you see, you can always grab the newest looks and retro merch in the MMR Rock Shop.)

You can listen to MMR anytime, anywhere - not just on National Radio Day, and no just on your old boombox! Use the free MMR App, ask your smart speaker to "Open MMR," or stream the rock right here on WMMR.com.
