Hear ‘Alice’s Restaurant’ on Pierre Robert’s Thanksgiving Show (Three Unique Versions!)
It’s a Philadelphia tradition: for decades now, family and friends across the Delaware Valley (and beyond, thanks to our fancy thinkin’ boxes) turn on WMMR to hear the warm, familiar voice of Pierre Robert welcoming them home, and cuing up “Alice’s Restaurant”.
As in years past, you’ll be able to hear Arlo Guthrie’s epic story three times, with each version differing ever so slightly. At 10am, you’ll hear the classic “Alice’s Restaurant Massacree” from the 1967 Alice’s Restaurant album. We’ll have a live version at noon, and then at 2pm, you’ll hear the song on the Vinyl Cut – yes, live vinyl on the radio, with all the snap, crackle, pops included for a nostalgic listening experience.
In between these three spins, Pierre will take your calls at 215-263-WMMR, read the texts that come in at 39333, and play special requests with Philly attitude and gratitude.

Honoring Alice Brock
This is the first holiday since the passing of Alice Brock, the titular character of Arlo’s story and a lifelong friend of the singer-songwriter. He posted on Facebook last week that around 1965, “Alice went into the restaurant business and I began my years as an entertainer. We were, both in our own ways, successful. As well as being a restauranteur, Alice also became an author, and an artist… She was a no-nonsense gal, with a great sense of humor.”
Arlo added: “This coming Thanksgiving will be the first without her… Alice and I spoke by phone a couple of weeks ago, and she sounded like her old self. we joked around and had a couple of good laughs even though we knew we’d never have another chance to talk together.”
Even though Alice is not the main character of “Alice’s Restaurant,” her eatery created a through-line for Arlo’s now-legendary story. We will remember her as we keep our musical tradition strong on WMMR this Thanksgiving.
Continue the Spirit of Giving
Our holiday weekend will carry us into the start of Preston and Steve’s Camp Out For Hunger, another Philly tradition.
