Philadelphia City Council, in partnership with the Philadelphia Fire Department (PFD), has announced a new smoke alarm installation program for the City of Philadelphia.
Beginning Monday, April 28, with the Second District, members of the PFD's Fire Prevention Division will visit City Council districts on specific days by the end of May to install life-saving smoke alarms in homes and distribute information about fire safety to citizens. Individuals residing in all 10 Council districts will receive smoke alarms.
Philadelphia City Council President Kenyatta Johnson (Second District) acknowledged the PFD's support and partnership with the Council President's Office and City Council on the initiative.
“The new program is a result of a recent discussion I had with Fire Commissioner Jeffery Thompson to find a way to have an immediate impact to reduce possible injury and death citywide as a result of fires,” Johnson said in a news release. “A fire can take a life in minutes, not hours, and a smoke alarm can take valuable seconds off that life-saving time. Smoke alarms save lives, prevent injuries, and reduce property damage.”
The City Council Smoke Alarm Installation Program will focus on the following City Council districts on the following days:
- Thursday, May 1: Fourth District (Councilmember Curtis Jones Jr.)
- Friday, May 2: First District (Councilmember Mark Squilla)
- Thursday, May 8: Third District (Councilmember Jamie Gauthier)
- Friday, May 9: Fifth District (Councilmember Jeffery Young Jr.)
- Monday, May 12: Sixth District (Councilmember Mike Driscoll)
- Thursday, May 15: Seventh District (Councilmember Quetcy Lozada)
- Friday, May 16: Eighth District (Councilwoman Cindy Bass)
- Monday, May 19: Ninth District (Councilmember Anthony Phillips)
- Tuesday, May 20: Tenth District (Councilmember Brian O'Neill)
Philadelphians who need smoke alarms can request them via Philly 311 by calling 311. The PFD will visit residents to install them in their homes for free.
