Staff of the food website Mashed must have munched their way through dozens of corned beef sandwiches and sampled tons of salads to come up with their recent list of the "absolute best delis in the U.S."

Two local delis earned their places on the list for having two of the best delicatessens in the country.

Famous 4th Street Delicatessen, at 700 S. 4th St. in Old City Philadelphia, has been proudly serving the City of Brotherly Love since 1923.  The deli cures its meats in house and bakes all its desserts in house.

"Famous 4th Street Deli is one of those places steeped in nostalgia and tradition that you just can't miss if you ever tour the City of Brotherly Love."

Condé Nast Traveler recommends ordering any one of the "overstuffed delicatessen sandwiches" and something tasty from the "smoked fish department." Don't forget the knishes, lox, bagels, and cold cuts piled high with meats and toppings.

Harold's New York Deli, at 1173 King Georges Post Road in Edison, New Jersey was lauded for its home-like setting with plenty of homestyle cooking. Here's a bite of what Mashed had to say about Harold's New York Deli:

"The sandwiches at Harold's Deli are handcrafted with heavenly and perfectly tender, juicy meats (the pastrami is made on the premises) and served up with a hefty side of coleslaw that makes for a more than generous portion. Its desserts, such as cheesecakes and pies, are all homemade. As Only In Your State notes, Harold's claims to have the World's Largest Pickle bar, where patrons can self-serve a massive variety of pickles, buffet-style."
