First responders from Newtown Township will face off at Stratford Friends School on July 30. The yearly blood drive challenges police and fire crews to gather the greatest number of donors.
"The need for blood is constant, and only volunteer donors can fulfill that need for patients in our community," said the Patch. "Nationwide, someone needs a unit of blood every two to three seconds and most of us will need blood in our lifetime."
The event takes place at Stratford Friends School, located at 2 Bishop Hollow Road in Newtown Square. Donors pick which team gets credit for their gift, which adds to the friendly rivalry between departments.
Those who give by July 31 will receive a Fandango Movie Reward. The American Red Cross will send this thank you gift by email once the donation drive wraps up.
Medical centers want all blood types to stock their shelves. Before giving, the Red Cross asks donors to stay hydrated and eat iron-rich foods. A full night's rest helps too.
Rules state donors must be 16 years old or older in most places. They should weigh over 110 pounds and feel well. From start to finish, visits last about an hour. The actual blood draw takes just 8-10 minutes.
While walk-ins work, scheduling ahead cuts wait times. Sign up through the Red Cross site for a smooth experience.
With summer comes a drop in blood supplies when hospitals need it most. This local contest tries to bridge the gap. Each donation can save three lives, and that's what makes this badge battle invaluable.
