A massive American flag made from handmade bandanas is taking shape in Philadelphia to mark the nation's 250th anniversary in 2026.

The 'Wings & Water' project includes contributions from city residents, young students, and Arizona's Native American groups. Visitors can see this growing piece at Cherry Street Pier until July 29.

At the heart of this work stands Duwenavue Sante' Johnson from Mason Stitch Art Collective, who crafts presidential flags in the Defense Logistics Agency's "Flag Room". Artist Hayato Matsushita also brought his vision to the design. His past work, "Esoteric America: Decoding the Founding Ideals," shaped his approach to this grand project.

Next year brings fresh additions to the flag. New bandanas will join the display during Independence Day festivities. Workshops will also appear across the city in the following months.

Each square of fabric weaves a unique tale into this tapestry of American life. Students paint their dreams while Native artists add traditional patterns, creating a rich mix of stories.

The flag is one of several city projects marking this milestone year. Workers will restore old landmarks while new art pieces will rise on street corners. Cherry Street Pier is the perfect stage for this type of artwork. Its open space allows passersby to witness the flag's steady growth.

The Cherry Street Pier website lists upcoming workshop schedules. The project team seeks more hands to add their touch before the final 2026 unveiling.
