As hot summer temperatures bear down on Pennsylvania, six Berks Encore sites in Berks County are offering air-conditioned spaces for older adults to escape the heat.

The Center at Spring Street in Boyertown and Casa de la Amistad in Reading will be open. Berks Encore encourages seniors planning to visit the centers to call ahead to confirm the hours of operation.

The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for Berks County that runs through Wednesday, July 30, at 8 p.m. Medical experts warn that when heat meets high humidity, the risk of heat-related illnesses increases, particularly among older adults.

During periods of extreme heat, the National Weather Service advises people to stay hydrated, seek air conditioning, and avoid sun exposure. Officials stress checking on older relatives and neighbors.

Health officials suggest wearing light, breathable clothing and planning outdoor activities for dawn or dusk. Those who must work outside should take frequent cooling breaks in shaded or air-conditioned spots.

Medical teams emphasize that heat stroke requires immediate attention. Key warning signs include dizziness, throbbing head pain, and mental confusion. If these symptoms strike, seek shade and call emergency services at once.

The heat wave stretching across the mid-Atlantic will persist through Wednesday. National Weather Service forecasters predict a cold front bringing with it showers and possible thunderstorms on Thursday, July 31, with highs in the low 80s. Showers are likely on Friday, Aug. 1, with highs in the lower 70s. The weekend will see a return to cooler, less humid weather, with clear skies and temperatures on Saturday, Aug. 2, in the upper 70s and near 80 degrees on Sunday, Aug. 3.
