A new racing tradition could get its start in September in Delaware County. The inaugural Delco 10 Miler aims to unite the Delaware County community through the friendly spirit of athletic competition on Sunday, Sept. 28.

According to WHYY Public Media, the downhill 10-mile race begins at Rose Tree Park in Upper Providence Township and wraps up outside of Subaru Park in the city of Chester. Diana Shacklock, director of special projects for Visit Delco, explained that the race is “the first of its kind in Delaware County.”

Runners will be expected to maintain a pace of approximately 15 minutes per mile. This pace will enable personnel to reopen the streets to traffic quickly.

Proceeds from the Delco 10 Miler will benefit Delco Arts, the Delaware County Parks & Recreation Department, and the HEADstrong Foundation. More than 800 people have already registered to participate. While slots are still open to participants, the race will be capped at 1,000.

Volunteers are still needed to help with cordoning off roads to traffic.

The race's director, Kevin Nolan, confirmed that complimentary beer, burgers, cheesesteaks, and hot dogs will greet participants at the finish line. He hopes that runners will enjoy the race and celebrate with a hearty party after the event.

"We expect the race to grow in years to come and be as big as some of those other races that are in the Philadelphia region,” said Nolan in a statement to WHYY.
