Open Streets will return to Center City near Rittenhouse Square on Sunday, Dec. 7, with a holiday-themed version of the event series.
The Open Streets initiative, designed by the Center City District (CCD) to encourage foot traffic, will span Walnut Street from 19th to Broad streets and 18th Street between Chestnut and Locust streets. This event will also include the 1400 block of Walnut Street for the first time.
During Open Streets, designated streets will be closed to vehicles from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. The CCD is programming various entertainment between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Live musicians, dancers, jump-ropers, carolers, and Santa visits will be included. Select shops and restaurants along the route will host various in-store events and giveaways.
According to PhillyVoice, Ice Sculpture Philly will carve a frozen baby grand piano at 18th and Walnut in the morning and early afternoon, followed by a performance at 3 p.m.
Since Open Streets began in the fall of 2024, the program has boosted foot traffic and sales for participating businesses, with about 62% more foot traffic and 36% higher sales during Open Streets event days, according to the PhillyVoice.
Organizers note the program has expanded beyond the traditional seven-block Rittenhouse Square route, which included the Gayborhood in June.
