As the nation's 250th birthday approaches in July, the City of Brotherly Love is reaping the benefits of international recognition for its role in this year's semiquincentennial celebrations.
In its annual "52 Places to Go" feature, The New York Times named Philadelphia as the No. 1 travel destination in the world for 2026.

“Celebrate the Semiquincentennial with fireworks and themed balls,” The New York Times wrote. It also highlighted some of the many commemorations and gatherings Philly has planned for America's birthday spectacular. They include a Red, White, & Blue To-Do Pomp & Parade, two new gallery openings at the National Constitution Center, a significant visual arts exhibition at the Philadelphia Art Museum, and a 2026 FIFA World Cup match on Independence Day.
The Philadelphia Inquirer also noted that several additional large-scale events are on tap for 2026, including the Major League Baseball (MLB) All-Star Game, a Fourth of July concert featuring yet-to-be-announced special guests, TED Democracy talks, and diverse neighborhood programs.
Philadelphia's Revolutionary War foundation and historical significance during this landmark year for the United States helped it take the top spot on the Times' list, ahead of global travel destinations such as Warsaw, Bangkok, Costa Rica's Osa Peninsula, and India's Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve.
