During the winter months in New Jersey, moms and dads are looking for museums and other ways to get out of the house with their kids. Fortunately, the Garden State is filled with kid-friendly museums that offer engaging opportunities to explore history, science, nature, and more. 

The family-oriented website Mommy Poppins listed 17 museums with free or low admission for families to explore. Below are five top picks:

All-Sports Museum of Southern New Jersey

This dynamic museum in Bridgeton showcases sports memorabilia from professional athletes in South Jersey. The museum offers free parking and access to the Cohanzick Zoo and the Bridgeton Splash Park, both about half a mile away.

Montclair Art Museum

From art to sculpture and everything in between, this family-friendly art museum is ideal for children 5 and older. Free admission is available on the first Thursday of each month from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Children younger than 12 are free on any day.

New Jersey State Museum

The New Jersey State Museum in Princeton offers fossils, fine art, New Jersey artifacts, and Civil War flags. Families can also sign up children for the Small Explorers program here (fees apply). On weekdays, metered street parking is available. Parking is free on weekends in the lots next to the museum and on the street in front of the museum.

Sea Life Museum

The educational visitor center of this animal rehabilitation hospital in Brigantine is open to the public. Visitors can discover life-sized replicas of marine mammals, sea turtles, and fish here. Admission is free, but a suggested donation of $5 per person is appreciated.

Washington Headquarters Museum

Find out how Gen. George Washington and his troops spent a freezing winter in Morristown in 1779-1780. The site's three exhibit halls are free to explore, but tickets are required for the Ford Mansion tour. After your visit, explore the Morristown Green for shopping and dining.
