When the former Philadelphia Navy Yard shuttered its gates on Sept. 26, 1996, the closure left more questions than answers about its future.

The PIDC, Philadelphia's public-private economic development corporation, acquired control of the Navy Yard on behalf of the City of Philadelphia in 2000. This acquisition began the transformation of the property from a decommissioned military base into a large-scale mixed-use redevelopment over 25 years.

According to PhillyVoice, today, the campus hosts more than 150 companies, employs over 16,000 people across various educational levels, and represents billions in investment. The Philadelphia Naval Shipyard stands as a national model for resiliency and the largest LEED Neighborhood Development in the United States.

Looking ahead, the Navy Yard plans to expand over the next decade with private residences, more homes, retail space, life sciences facilities, and advanced manufacturing to generate more jobs and boost Philadelphia's economy.

To mark the 25th anniversary of the Navy Yard revitalization, PIDC has released Legacy & Horizon: 25 Years of TransformationAccording to PhillyVoice, each episode highlights a specific aspect, featuring the voices of leaders, partners, and community members who helped shape the Navy Yard's transformation and continue to drive its future.
