Kelly's Seafood, a family-run Northeast Philadelphia institution since 1958, announced it will close and put its building up for sale after 68 years in business. The restaurant will remain open at 9362 Old Bustleton Ave. while a sale is finalized, giving customers time to redeem gift certificates.
"We have been honored to serve you and your families," the Kelly family wrote on social media. "… You stuck by us through some very challenging times, and we thank you for that."
Twin brothers Brett and Brian Kelly operate the restaurant alongside their sister, who handles administrative and hosting duties, and a nephew who works in the kitchen. The building is roughly 7,300 square feet and is listed at $2.2 million, including the liquor license, equipment, furnishings, and an attached apartment unit.
"A lot went into this decision, family most of all," Kelly said in an email. "[We're] not concerned about what comes in here, but the Kelly name will not continue."
Keeping with their motto, "There's always a Kelly in the kitchen," twin brothers Brett and Brian Kelly are the fourth generation to run the business.
Opened in 1958 by William T. Kelly, the restaurant became a neighborhood staple known for its nautically themed interior, dense menu, early-bird specials, and Cajun-inspired cuisine. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Barstool Sports' Barstool Fund provided financial support to the business.
Brett Kelly said the decision to sell was first discussed in January. Employees will be kept informed throughout the sale process.
