Beer lovers looking for something truly different won’t want to miss the return of the Yards Real Ale Invitational, happening Sunday, April 12 from 12:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Yards Brewing Company in Philadelphia. This one‑of‑a‑kind event brings together more than 40 cask‑conditioned beers from some of the Mid‑Atlantic’s finest breweries for a celebration rooted in tradition, craftsmanship, and community.
Unlike a typical beer festival, the Real Ale Invitational focuses exclusively on Real Ale — beer that is unfiltered, unpasteurized, and naturally carbonated in a cask. This historic brewing method dates back centuries and offers a softer carbonation, fuller body, and evolving flavor profile. Yards has championed this tradition for over 30 years, starting with Extra Special Ale (ESA), the first beer they ever brewed and one they still serve on cask today.
First launched in 2008, the Real Ale Invitational has grown into Yards’ signature celebration, honoring the way beer was enjoyed for generations. As Philadelphia approaches its 250th anniversary in 2026, the festival serves as a flavorful nod to colonial‑era taverns, when beer was pulled straight from casks and shared among friends during conversation and debate.
Guests can explore Yards’ brewing and packaging facility while sampling specialty firkins crafted exclusively for the event. Expect a wide range of creative offerings — from spiced English porters and barrel‑aged Belgian quads to inventive combinations like terpene‑infused IPAs and habanero‑watermelon pale ales.
This year’s participants include Philadelphia brewing favorites such as Human Robot, Forest & Main, Evil Genius, Wissahickon, Carbon Copy, Sly Fox, Tonewood, and many more. Live folk‑rock music from Burnin’ Bridges will set the tone, while complimentary brewery tours, food for purchase, and a classic Philly‑style pretzel round out the experience.
Tickets include beer pours, live music, food access, and a commemorative glass, with designated driver tickets available. A limited number of VIP tickets offer early entry and first access to rare casks.
The Real Ale Invitational takes place at 500 Spring Garden Street. For tickets and details, visit yardsbrewing.com.
