Brand New Nonprofit to hold a Spin A Thon For Pediatric Cancer
What: Jake’s Dragon Foundation and stRIDE Fitness Studio in Phoenixville, PA, will be hosting a 26.2 hour Spin A Thon.
Date: December 8th and 9th, 2018
Why: to raise funds for childhood cancer.
Where: stRIDE Fitness studios in Phoenixville, PA.
Jake’s Dragon Foundation was created by the McHugh family of Collegeville after their youngest son, Jake, passed away on February 9, 2018. Jake was fourteen years old and bravely battled Peripheral T-Cell Lymphoma for six months.
Jake and his family spent many days during treatment discussing how they could pay it forward and help other families once he was well again. Sadly, Jake lost his battle. His family has committed to helping others in Jake’s memory. Jake loved dragons. He had an imagination like no other. His dragons watched over him throughout all of his treatments.
In April 2018, Jake’s Dragon Foundation was created under the fiscal sponsorship of the American Childhood Cancer Organization, a 501(c)(3) national organization. The ACCO recently partnered with Amazon to raise awareness and much needed funding to fight pediatric cancer.
December twelfth would have been Jake’s fifteenth birthday. To honor the memory of Jake and the many other children who are still fighting or who have gained their wings, we are hosting a Spin A Thon at stRIDE Fitness studios in Phoenixville, PA.
Thirty teams will ride for a total of 26.2 hours, starting at 10 am on Saturday, December 8, 2018 and ending Sunday, December 9, 2018 at 12:12 pm to represent Jake’s actual birthday. Teams will consist of 8-26 members.
Each hour will be led by a spin instructor and have a special theme.
The registration is set at $15 per participant which includes a commemorative t-shirt. There is a minimum fundraising goal of $750 per team.
There will be raffles, prizes, a celebrity/superhero team of riders and more. All proceeds from this event will help local families with financial assistance and fund innovative research.
Coinciding with this event will also be our first annual Giving Tuesday gift card drive. We are asking donors to purchase gift cards for food, gas and necessities to help local families offset the financial strain while their child is in treatment. The cards will be delivered to AI Dupont hospital on December 19, 2018.
The Mission of Jake’s Dragon Foundation: Jake’s Dragon Foundation was borne out of profound loss. Our mission is to fund pediatric cancer research, as well as, assist families financially in the form of gift cards to purchase necessities like food, gas, clothing etc. The research funds will focus on innovative pediatric cancer treatments. Jake was denied the chance to be involved in research trials because of his age. Ninety six percent of the funding for cancer research is given to adult cancers. Jake was a protector of the dragon- a noble creature. We will do this to allow a little bit of relief to families. We do this to honor Jake.
