On April 29th, 1968, Metro Media in Philadelphia turned its little-used FM frequency into a forward reaching experiment. It was 93.3 WMMR, and because it was a stereo signal, the company offered music on it. Some standards, like The Frank Sinatra Hour, but one show truly was an experiment-It was called The Marconi Experiment and featured a burgeoning genre call Album Oriented Rock.
We played The White Album when it was new. Introduced Philadelphia to little known bands like U2, Bon Jovi, Nirvana, The Police, Green Day, AC/DC, Tool and a guy named Bruce Springsteen (to name just a few). Thousands of songs of have debuted on these airwaves over the last 55 years. And we’re still going strong!
Below, we highlighted a handful of songs that debuted each year that radio station has been around. It’s not every new song, it’s just a little taste. Tune into MMR all weekend to hear more songs from every year of our existence during our Big 5 Birthday Celebration.
