Slash Says Guns N’ Roses Haven’t Written Any New Material Yet

Slash offered an update on Guns N' Roses working on new music, and it sounds like fans need just a little patience before hearing anything new.

In a new interview, Slash said regarding new music, "As far as new Guns is concerned, we haven't even gotten to that point of really in earnest sitting down and writing. We've been doing a lot of material that's been sort of sitting around for a while. So that will be a whole focused endeavor unto itself."

New music from GN'R has been top of mind ever since Slash and Duff McKagan rejoined the band and they embarked on their Not In This Lifetime tour. The band has released two tracks -- "Absurd" and "Hard School" -- but both tracks were reworkings of material from the band's vaults.

Back in May 2019, Slash said in an appearance on Talkin' Rock with Meltdown, "When we finish the tour [GN'R's select festival dates] in the fall, then we will commence on working on what will be the next Guns record...The thing is we haven't really done anything yet, and I don't want to say anything like, 'Oh, yeah...' You know how people used to promote sh-t and lie through their teeth? I just wanted to be honest about it, and so there really was no telling what we were going to do at that point, but at this point, I do know we're going to do this run, and we've already started working on stuff. So, there you go."

In April 30, fans started to get their hopes up on new music when Duff's wife, Susan Holmes McKagan, said on an episode of the GN'R podcast Appetite for Distortion, "I will say GN'R have been working fastidiously on some killer new stuff, and I can't say much, but I've heard bits and bobs and it's pretty epic. I do wanna spread good news, but not detailed news, I guess."

In July 2020, Slash would say in an interview with Sweetwater, "I’ve been pretty much a homebody, but I’ve been back and forth between my studio in the house and doing a lot of writing and recording on my own. I’ve been jamming with Duff and I’ve been jamming with Axl, and I’ve been doing stuff like that, so we’ve been getting some work done that way. I’m basically just focusing on writing new music and recording demos and recording guitar stuff for Guns and whatnot."

So, once again, fans really need just a little patience (yeah.) In the meantime, Slash has gone back to his solo work and just dropped a new track with Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators last week titled "The River Is Rising" from their new album 4.
