Willie Mays died on Tuesday, June 18th, 2024. Widely known as "The Say Hey Kid," Mays will go down in history as one of the greatest baseball players of all time. Willie Mays was 93 years old.

Tim Kurkjian, ESPN Baseball Insider and Hall of Fame baseball writer, has a podcast and it's cohosted by me, his son Jeff. Despite working in country radio, I've always loved the game baseball. Naturally, with a dad like mine, it's hard not to grow up loving this sport. So we started our podcast called "Is This A Great Game, Or What?" which has been dream of ours for years.

Tim Kurkjian On Willie Mays

Tim described Willie Mays as the "greatest player I have ever seen." He also added that he is only second to Babe Ruth when it comes to the greatest players to ever play this game.

He also added a story about the great Pete Rose. Rose's 4256 hits is the most among all players to play Major League Baseball. He also is the all-time leader in most games plays and at-bats. He played five years in Philadelphia for our Phillies from 1979-1983.

Major League Baseball Honoring The Legacy

It's kind of incredible that Willie Mays passed just two days before a very important game Major League Baseball has been planning. On Thursday, June 20th, Major League Baseball will host a game a Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Alabama. Mays is from Alabama and he, along with other stars like Hank Aaron, are a huge focus of this game to honor the history of baseball in this area.

We dove into this really big game for Major League Baseball in the full episode of "Is This A Great Game, Or What?" You can listen above or watch below!

Nick Castellanos Phillies Walk Off

It's safe to say that Nick Castellanos as struggled the first half of this season, just not able to really find his rhythm. That happens, baseball is hard! But on Tuesday, June 18th, he totaled up four hits including a game-winning double to right field.

Let's set the stage. Kyle Schwarber back in the eighth inning hits a solo shot to put the Philadelphia Phillies within one run. Heading into the ninth inning, Bryce Harper will lead off, followed up by Alec Bohm (one of the best players in the National League) and then Bryson Stott. Safe to say, we have some real winners coming to the plate in the bottom of the ninth.

Harper? Single. Bohm? Single. Harper hustles to make it to third. Stott? Single. Harper scores and now we are all tied up at three. Coming to the plate is Nick Castellanos. Despite his recent struggles, he has already put together a three hit game and now he has a chance to win it for the Phillies.

The Padres pitcher, Robert Suarez, no relation to our Ranger Suarez, had just given up three straight singles from Harper, Bohm and then Stott with the tying RBI. Needless to say, he;s

Phillies Walk Off, Complete Epic Comeback

You can't even begin to understand that effort these guys are putting in day in and day out. So amazing. They came back, at home, from down two runs entering the bottom of the eighth inning, scoring three runs to win the game 4-3. Beating the San Diego Padres in Philly is important, have to win these important home games without a doubt.

After the storm calmed down a bit, he had a big smile on. A walk-off is perhaps the most exciting finish to a game you can have. Four straight hits and Nicky C does this. MAN we wish we were at that game. (Photo by Tim Nwachukwu/Getty Images)
