Eddie Vedder at the Beacon Theater in NYC – Concert Review
Nick McIlwain and Pierre Robert see
Pearl Jam front man Eddie Vedder
and his band, The Earthlings
New York City’s Beacon Theater, 02-04-22
From Nick:
Except for the 2021 MMRBQ (which was a great show, obviously, but also was work) I hadn’t been to a live concert since I saw The Struts in December of 2019. The pandemic took away a lot of things, but I really missed seeing live music and especially seeing a band I loved. I was supposed to see Pearl Jam, my favorite band, on their tour in the spring of 2020. Nope. And at that time, the entity of Eddie Vedder and the Earthlings didn’t even exist. Fast forward to February 2022: Eddie’s got a new record, “Earthling“, with a new band and I was lucky enough to see them perform live in a gorgeous building, the Beacon Theater, in New York City. And this concert was pure joy.
The band contains Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, guitarist and producer Andrew Watt, Jane’s Addiction bassist Chris Chaney, former Chili Peppers guitarist Josh Klinghoffer, as well as opening act and longtime friend to Eddie Vedder, Glen Hansard.
Hansard, the Irish singer-song writer, performed beautifully as the opener, doing a mostly acoustic set. Here’s a clip of his wonderful song from the motion picture, “Once”, “Falling Slowly”:
After a brief intermission following Hansard’s set, Eddie and the band came out and opened with a cover of R.E.M.’s 1992 classic “Drive”:
From there, they repeated a lot of the same songs they did in Night One at The Beacon, including the covers, Tom Petty’s “Room At The Top” and “Timeless Melody” by Liverpool singer and guitarist Lee Mavers and the band The La’s. Sometimes when you go to see a show and the band does a lot of NEW music, it can be a bit of a turn-off, but I didn’t feel that way once during this show. Eddie and the band performed most of the songs from “Earthling” and even though I only knew two of those songs in advance (“Long Way” and “Brother The Cloud”) I was so impressed and can’t wait to listen to the entire record. The main reason for this is that the band IS AWESOME! They’re all really impressive musicians, but especially for a new band, they play incredibly well together and are clearly having a LOT OF FUN! If you aren’t familiar with Andrew Watt, check him out because he’s great.
It’s a different show than a Pearl Jam show; not better or worse, but definitely different. The energy of the new-ness of all of it brought a ton of joy and fun and positivity to the night. Chad Smith and Chris Chaney and Josh Klinghoffer are great additions to what Eddie can and does do as a front man, and I can’t wait to see Josh when he tours with Pearl Jam, too.
Danny Clinch, the longtime photographer for acts like Bruce Springsteen and Pearl Jam, even joined the band for a fun little fake fight and riff and a great jam on the harmonica for the new song, “Try”.
After a fake fight where Eddie Vedder tried to eject the non musician Danny Clinch Photography from the stage … Danny pulls out his harmonica. “That’s not an instrument!” Then they play. @Danny_Clinch pic.twitter.com/DF1OyB7zsV

From there, the night just took off and Ed and the band took it to the next level. After some kind words about Chad Smith and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who took Eddie and Pearl Jam under their wings in the early 90’s, the band launched into a B-side that Ed said was an homage to the Peppers, “DIRTY FRANK” a move hardly ANYONE expected! This fun, funky rare song has only been played a handful of times live and many Pearl Jam fans have never been able to check it off their list. Diehard PJ fans chase it and chase it, but according to PearlJam.com, it’s only been played a total of ten times in thirty years! We were lucky enough to see it at the Beacon.
Following “Dirty Frank”, Ed did a ton of Pete Townshend-style guitar windmills and launched into a fan favorite, “Porch”, which closed out the first set and led into the encore break.
When they came back out on to the stage, the band did another cover, this time paying tribute to another musician from Liverpool with “Isn’t It A Pity” by George Harrison:
The last three songs blew the lid off the joint!
First, a Pearl Jam song (and another fan favorite), “Not For You”:
The second to last song was a perennial favorite (and often a show-closer), a blistering version of Neil Young’s “Rockin In The Free World”.
Eddie then introduced (and re-introduced all the members of the band:
After thanking the crew and thanking the audience and everyone’s patience for listening to so many new songs, the band went into the closer. I’m not sure if ANYONE saw this coming, but it was one more cover, Prince’s “Purple Rain”!
“Purple Rain”, with Eddie singing the lower parts and first verse, while Josh sang lead in the second and third verse, was simply incredible. Klinghoffer and Andrew Watt traded guitar solos and the final song of the night brought so many smiles and so much joy to so many people.
It was an incredible ending to an amazing show. And if you’ve made it to the end of this article and Eddie Vedder or Pearl Jam aren’t your thing, believe me, I understand. But what I would like to stress in this post is this: it was a night of joy, of release, of communal bonding, of love of live music, of togetherness. We all got to be in the same room at the same time and see a great band play some incredible music and for that, I am enormously grateful. I can’t wait to get to another show!
I’ve been in love for 30+ years. And I’ve had some pretty dark times. But on some of the worst days, what Ed and these guys have given me has helped me to get through and eventually, in a roundabout sort of way, it got me here tonight.
