This weekend, I did something a little different than usual. I went to the Red Bull BC One Cypher Break Dancing National Championships at the Fillmore on Saturday night.
Super talented ‘Breakers’ from all over the country descended upon Fishtown to show their break-dancing skills and potentially earn a spot in the world finals in Paris later this year. The weekend was filled with seminars and workshops hosted by legendary breakers and dancers from all over the country.
The USA’s top 16 B-Boys and B-girls faced off in a bracket-style competition with a panel of expert breaking judges deciding who’ll advance to the Red Bull BC One Last Chance Cypher in Paris, France on October 19th, 2023. Steve Believe & Myverse hosted the event with the music and mixing provided by DJ Fleg. Some of the best in the business including Alien Ness, Beta, Menno & Kastet judged the performances.
Red Bull Features Excellent Break Dancing
Towards the latter half of the competition there were performances by LA/Philly Hip-Hoppers Coast Contra and legendary Wu-Tang Clan member Raekwon.
I was in awe of the performers and performances all night long. They moved so effortlessly and seemingly light as they danced around the mat in front of the packed Philly crowd. The B-boy and B-girls were broken up into their respective brackets and each battled it out with some of the craziest, acrobatic and energetic dance moves I have ever seen. It was like the perfect mix of dance, gymnastics, karate, parkour as they battled it out on the mat at the Fillmore.
If you would like to check out the Red Bull BC One Last Chance Cypher in Paris, France in October, you can watch it live on Red Bull TV along with Red Bull’s YouTube and TikTok channels.
The performances captivated me, and I tried to capture some of the best on video. They all moved so fast while strutting they stuff, that it was darn near impossible to get a decent photo of the action. All of the B-boys and B-girls that made it to the Red Bull BC One Cypher Break Dancing National Championships in Philly were out-of-this-world talented and all deserved to be there!
Congrats to all who participated!
