MMR to replay Springsteen’s iconic concert from The Main Point in Bryn Mawr: Feb 5, 1975
“I’m Pullin’ Out Of Here to Win”
Tonight at 9PM, Jacky Bam Bam will play the Best Of Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band, in a concert that was originally broadcast live on WMMR February 5th, 1975. The historic setlist contains “In-Progress” versions of Born To Run, Thunder Road and Jungleland. The songs are recognizable, but far different than the mainstream recordings we’re used to hearing.
Leading up to the show, everyone involved knew how big of an event it was going to become. A memo [pictured below] instructed all WMMR DJs to “promote this historic broadcast to death.” It goes on to explain that each hour runners would drive the reel-to-reel recordings from Bryn Mawr to the radio station at 19th & Walnut to played immediately over the airwaves.
The broadcast begins with the beloved Ed Sciaky bringing Bruce and the Band on stage with a prophetic introduction to what would become their final gig at The Main Point. They had played the venue numerous times before, one particular show was described in Bruce’s 2016 book, “Born to Run” not because it was great, but because he remembered only about thirty people showing up.
Kevin Gunn joined Pierre this afternoon to share behind the scenes stories from that night:
From this concert, Bruce would go on to finish and release Born To Run in August, simultaneously appear on the covers of Time and Newsweek magazines in October, and finish the year with 5 sold out shows at the Tower Theatre.
Celebrate the 45th anniversary of Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band tonight at 9PM with Jacky Bam Bam. [Listen live on 93.3 WMMR, download the WMMR App or stream the station live on wmmr.com]
