WMMR Promo: The 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair!
Why, they had a little bit of everything! The Ice Cream Cone! Ferris Wheels! Hamburgers! Sex toys!!! Wait, what??!
OK, so that last one Steve made up. But in 1904, there really WERE quite a few food innovations at that World’s Fair!
A number of foods are claimed to have been invented at that particular fair. The most popular claim is that the “waffle-style ice cream cone” was invented and first sold during the fair. However, there are conflicting reports that suggest it was simply popularized at that Fair.
Other claims are a bit more dubious, including the hamburger and hot dog, peanut butter, iced tea, and cotton candy. Again, it just seems like it’s more likely, however, that these were first introduced to mass audiences and popularized by the fair. And according to a few published articles, both Dr Pepper and Puffed Wheat cereal were first introduced to a national audience that year.
No published reports mention the Sybian, however, which was probably conceived in the 1970’s and invented in the early 80’s. To be fair, we weren’t actually THERE in 1904 in St. Louis, so we can’t be 100% certain.
