VENTURA, CALIFORNIA - AUGUST 07: Eric Wilson of Sublime with Rome performs during Concerts In Your Car at Ventura County Fairgrounds and Event Center on August 07, 2020 in Ventura, California. Due to ongoing coronavirus social distance restrictions, drive-in concerts have become a popular way for fans to experience live music
It’s been more than 27 years since Sublime performed their last show with Bradley Nowell. The band’s lead singer died of a heroin overdose on May 25, 1996. His son, Jakob, was 11 months old.
In the time since, the surviving members of Sublime formed various other projects. Most notable was Long Beach Dub Allstars which bassist Eric Wilson and drummer Bud Gaugh formed the year after Nowell’s death. It lasted until 2002. Then, in 2009, Wilson and Gaugh teamed up with Rome Ramirez to become Sublime With Rome. Gaugh left the new iteration of Sublime two years later.
That’s what makes this announcement so special. Tonight, Sublime bassist Eric Wilson, Sublime drummer Bud Gaugh and Jakob Nowell, son of the late Bradley Nowell, will perform together for the first time.
Jakob has found his own music career as the frontman and guitarist for Jakob’s Castle.
The event bringing the trio together is a benefit show for Bad Brains’ guitarist, H.R. who has had to quit touring due to health issues.
News of a relaunched Sublime lineup have the rumor mills buzzing with grand ideas of tour or festival appearances.
A representative addressed these rumors. He told Billboard, “The guys plan to jam together in support of H.R. at the Teragram Ballroom on Dec. 11. Beyond that we’re not prepared to make any announcements.”
He added, “If the vibe’s there, the vibe’s there.”
Looking ahead, Sublime With Rome have a New Zealand tour and festivals booked in 2024, and Jakob’s Castle is opening for G Love & Special Sauce on a tour running through the end of March.
