The Struts’ Birthday Surprise for Pierre Robert

Pierre Robert is known for celebrating special occasions: almost every day in the Workforce Blocks, he either commemorates a rockstar birthday, or he's sending out a set of music for a WMMR listener's big day.

So what do you do when it's Pierre's birthday? At WMMR, we thought it would be nice to toast our favorite Good Citizen with a special delivery. Who better to bring it to our door than our friends in The Struts?

Before taking the stage at the Fillmore Philadelphia on Friday night, the Struts crashed Pierre Robert’s Workforce blocks - live on the air! - with a cake from Isgro Pastries and a beautiful singalong. Pierre was stunned, to say the least. See his reaction on Instagram.

Luke Spiller, Adam Slack, Jed Elliott, and Gethin Davies spent some time at the WMMR studios to update Pierre on their current tour, their brand new single, and how interesting it’s been to hear their songs in soundtracks and commercials. They also reminisce about the last time they were in Philly, which involved an ice luge and a few shots of tequila…

The band, who hail from the UK, discussed their relationship with their American fans with Pierre, and all of their WMMR experiences over the years: MMRBQ, Pierre Presents, a live performance on Preston and Steve, and more.

After delivering an epic birthday surprise to Pierre Robert live on WMMR last Friday, The Struts brought their glitter and glam to the the stage of the Fillmore Philadelphia, where they never fail to entertain.

Pierre welcomed the crowd after Barns Courtney's opening set. You may remember Barns from an early morning visit to the Preston and Steve Show in 2018, when he performed the single "99" in studio. Despite a few small technical difficulties on the Fillmore stage, the band threw themselves into the music, stomping, thrashing and clapping throughout. At one point Barns vacated his mic stand to join the crowd on the floor, where he was gleefully swallowed up in the throng.

The Struts never fail to win us over: their tight musicianship and British charm are easy to fall for. They launched us into a carefree weekend with a Friday night blowout of hit after hit. Mixed in was their latest single "Heaven's Got Nothing On You," which Pierre debuted on MMR in the Workforce Blocks earlier that day. Get the full setlist here.
