Jelly Roll has been on a tear in 2024, culminating in the release of his highly anticipated album Beautifully Broken. The 22-track collection is out today (10/11) and last week at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, we got a fiery preview of his latest genre-blending project.
The Nashville native has planted his roots firmly in the world of country, but his tastes and talent branch far beyond its sphere. Rap, rock, pop and gospel are all woven into the new album, all of them tied together by Jelly Roll’s soulful rasp.
His set at the Big Joint on October 2nd in South Philly spanned his entire career. From his early days self-producing mixtapes to select tracks from Beautifully Broken, Jelly Roll honored each piece of himself, sonically and emotionally. He also honored his influences with a medley of covers, commenting, “My mama used to listen to s*** like this!” before rolling into the country classic “Friends in Low Places”.
