Beasley Media and WMMR’s own Joe Bell was a featured comedian at the Philadoptables Comedy for Canines and Cats event. It happened Saturday, October 14, 2023. Proceeds benefited Philadoptables and their friends at PURR Philly!
I was so happy to be there to support my boss and friend, Joe! Joe Bell is a true treasure, and we are lucky to have him here in Philadelphia. It took place at a really sick venue called The Fuge.
The Fuge is home to the Johnsville Centrifuge, developed by the U.S. Navy in 1949. Designed to simulate gravitational forces experienced by pilots and astronauts during flight, the 180-ton centrifuge is the largest and most powerful ever built. It’s capable of accelerating to 175 mph in under 7 seconds! It tested the effects of gravitational forces on pilots and astronauts and helped prepare them for the lift-off and reentry phases of their space missions.
Operational for nearly 50 years, the centrifuge was an invaluable training tool for all of America’s early astronauts, including Alan Shepard, John Glenn, Donald K. (“Deke”) Slayton, Neil Armstrong, and Buzz Aldrin!
The man in the red shirt in my pictures is Gene Blum, general manager of The Fuge building. He was kind enough to give us a grand tour of the facilities.
