On Monday night, an otherwise quiet evening, Brooklyn Bowl in Fishtown, Philadelphia was raging. Thievery Corporation took over the room with their unique mix of dub and reggae, with a wide range of world music influences mixed in.
Thievery Corporation formed in Washington, D.C. in the mid nineties when the group’s founding members Rob Garza and Eric Hilton connected in the city’s club scene. The chemistry between the two translated in the studio, and their mutual appreciation for jazz, Bossa Nova and even Middle Eastern classical music led them to form their own record label. In 1996, Eighteenth Street Lounge Music was born, and has since been the label home for Thievery Corporation and a bunch of other artists across the jazz, Latin and Afrobeat genres.
Since the 90s, this collective has become a staple at music festivals the world over, including Lollapalooza. The lyrics of their songs are just as diverse as the different regions they draw from musically; some are sung in Spanish, French, Portuguese and even Hindi.
