It was the double doink heard ‘round the world! 4 years ago today our defending Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles marched into a very, VERY cold Soldier Field in Chicago to take on the Bears in a NFC Wild Card matchup. Our Birds were a 6-seed and hanging on for their playoff lives, while the Bears, who were having a decent season, were a 3-seed also securing the NFC North title – their first since 2010.
Nick Foles had replaced Carson Wentz for the second straight year and was our starter for the game. The Eagles were down 15-10 late in the 4th, when Foles found wide-receiver Golden Tate in the endzone for a touchdown, and the lead – they attempted a 2-point conversion but failed. The Bear’s and quarterback Mitchell Trubisky had less than a minute to get the team within field-goal range – which he did – then it was up to former Eagle, then Bear, placekicker Cody Parkey to seal the deal for the Chicago. If you recall, Eagles Coach Doug Pederson called time-out to “ice the kicker” and even though whistles were blown to signify the time-out, Parkey attempted… and made the kick, though it didn’t count.
After the timeout, the Bears and Parkey had their second field goal attempt ever-so-slightly tipped by Birds defensive tackle Treyvon Hester which then ricocheted off the left upright, then hit the crossbar of the goal post, eventually hitting the ground in the endzone… no good!! EAGLES WIN 16-15!!
The term “Double Doink” was said by Cris Collinsworth who was broadcasting the game on NBC with Al Michaels – Collinsworth: “Oh my goodness… The Bears’ season is gonna end on a double doink.” …and the rest was history. The Eagles would lose the following week in the NFC Divisional round against the top-seeded New Orleans Saints.
