I recently read up on the history of Eddie Van Halen. The family moved from the Netherlands in the early 1960s… English was a second language for the Van Halen brothers. Eddie started learning the piano at age 6 but never learned to read music. Instead, he watched recitals of Bach and Mozart and learned to improvise. Eddie and Alex both went on to become accomplished piano players.
Eddie and Alex Van Halen formed their first band in elementary school. They called themselves The Broken Combs… click here for a photo of the band. Eddie spoke at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History in 2015 saying, “We came here with approximately $50 and a piano, and we didn’t speak the language. Now look where we are. If that’s not the American dream, what is?”
I could write on for days about the history of Eddie Van Halen and so many other rockers. Musicians who have given us some of the most amazing music and the life touchstones of our own history.
Celebrate the music and the lifestyle. I hope you enjoy these gifts for classic rock lovers… whether it’s a gift you give yourself or a gift for someone special in your life.
