Grocery Store Chain Goes Viral For ‘Hot Dog Water’ Cocktail
Just because you can doesn’t mean you should. Right now, I’m talking about food trends like the viral “Oatzempic” or the Scallion Latte craze. Recently, social media has been buzzing about “hot dog summer.” Cincinnati-based grocery chain Kroger posted a video on Instagram and TikTok featuring a new hot dog-themed cocktail. The caption reads, “Did we just make the cocktail of the summer?!”
Hot Dog Water Cocktail Recipe
The viral cocktail combines a shot of hot dog water, freshly squeezed lemon juice, a shot of brown liquor, and ice. The video shows the drink being completed with the rim of the glass glazed with a pickle spear and dipped in salt. The cocktail is then garnished with a small white onion, a tomato, one yellow pepper, and a mini hot dog.
Since its posting, the video has gained over 90,000 views on TikTok and over 250,000 views on Instagram.
Mixed reviews were flooding the comments that ranged from absolute disgust to genuine intrigue.
Dude Wipes, a disposable wipe brand manufactured by the Chicago-based Dude Products, commented under the July 4 video, writing, “You’re gonna need us.” Duke’s Mayonnaise simply said “would,” as in I would try it.
One person added, “to think I gotta block Kroger now, lol,” while someone else said “respectfully, log off.”
“Kroger’s marketing team is unhinged, and I’m so here for it,” another person wrote.
However, one Instagram commenter (@queencitylisa) was impressed. “I mean it’s basically a protein shake with electrolytes. Health & wellness is my passion.” And someone on TikTok gave Kroger a pass, “yall lucky the chocolate milk so good so ima let this one slide,” they wrote.
I would personally pass on this glizzy-inspired cocktail. The drink’s color reminds me too much of dirty dishwater. Full disclosure, I can’t even handle a pickle martini or a spicy margarita.
Apparently, the grocery store chain isn’t the first to create such a beverage. Summit Sips, a cocktail website tried a similar hot dog recipe in 2011, the Frank Collins. According to the website, it starts with all-beef hot dogs boiled in water. To increase the beef flavor, they suggest dropping in a beef bouillon cube. Once the hot dogs are cooked to temperature, set aside one hot dog for garnish. Allow the water to cool, then add in gin, a bit of beer, and some ice, and a hot dog garnish.
