The Top 5 Golf Courses in South Jersey comes with a heavy duty rating system. Golf Digest really analyzes the course across America!

Golf Digest decides the best golf courses based on a seven-criteria system:

  • Shot Options: This measures how many different ways a golfer can approach each hole.
  • Challenge: This measures how difficult the course is to play, but also how fair it is.
  • Layout Variety: This measures how different the holes are from each other, both in terms of length, shape, and terrain.
  • Distinctiveness: This measures how different individual holes are from each other.
  • Aesthetics: This measures how pleasing the course is to the eye, both in terms of its natural beauty and its design.
  • Conditioning: This measures how well-maintained the course is, including the fairways, greens, and bunkers.
  • Character: This measures how the course reflects its setting and history.
  • Fun: How fun is it to play for all levels of ability

Each of these criteria is scored on a scale of 1 to 10, and the scores are then averaged to determine the overall ranking of the course. In addition, the scores for Shot Options and Layout Variety are doubled, to give them more weight in the overall ranking. The Fun criteria started 2 years ago. Since their data is based on at least 75 evaluations over 10 years, Fun has not had enough time to be a main component of criteria yet.

Golf Digest’s panelists are a group of about 1,900 well-traveled amateur golfers who play and evaluate courses all over the world. They submit their evaluations on a rolling 10-year basis, so the rankings reflect the latest thinking on the best golf courses in the world.

In addition to the seven  criteria listed above, Golf Digest also considers a number of other factors when ranking courses.  Those rankings include the course’s history, its championship pedigree, and its popularity among golfers. However, the eight criteria listed above are the most important factors in determining the rankings.
