Wells Fargo Center Is Getting A New Name

Starting next summer, the Wells Fargo Center, home to the Sixers, the Flyers and the Wings in South Philadelphia, will have a new moniker soon. The change comes as the naming contract between the arena and Wells Fargo Bank is set to expire in August of 2025. 6ABC reports that the bank has chosen not to renew their naming rights on the building. A statement explains that the financial institution "regularly reviews and adjusts our overall sponsorship strategy. As such, we have made the business decision not to renew the naming rights contract to Wells Fargo Center." They went on to say: "Wells Fargo has a long, rich history in the City of Philadelphia. Our nearly 4,000 employees across Pennsylvania make us one of the largest private employers in the area, and we remain committed to the City of Philadelphia region." Wells Fargo Center: Names Over the Years Located at 3601 S Broad Street in South Philly, the arena was originally going to be called the Spectrum II, though that name didn't stick. The 21K seater opened in 1996 as the Corestates Center. Two years later it became the First Union Center, and then in 2003 it morphed into the Wachovia Center. The building held that name until 2010, when Wells Fargo acquired the Wachovia Corporation.
