Did you know that Philadelphia has more than one professional football team? Well, we do… kind of. The Philadelphia Stars of the newly re-established USFL (United States Football League) are set to kick-off their 2023 season against the Memphis Showboats in their inaugural home debut at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium in Memphis, Tenn. this Saturday at 4:30p on Fox.
You may be asking, what do you mean by “Kind of”? As it turns out, since their establishment in 2021, the Philadelphia Stars have been playing their home games in Detroit at legendary Ford Field, home of the NFL’s Detroit Lions. Yup, a team based right here in Philadelphia, plays their home games close to 600 miles away.
In their inaugural season in the North Division of the USFL last year, the Stars went 6-4, winning 4 of their last 5 games, clinching a playoff spot. After conquering the New Jersey Generals in the North Division Championship game, they earned themselves their first USFL Championship game appearance. The Stars would ultimately fall to the Birmingham Stallions 33-30 losing their first, and hopefully not their last, attempt at the USFL Championship.
The Stars team’s colors are red, orange, gold & white. And yes, we have a mascot! The alien-like creature goes by the fan-appointed name ‘Blob’.
This season, the Stars have five “home” games at Ford Field and five away games in parts of Ohio, Tennessee, and Alabama. The closest our Stars play to their “home” of Philadelphia, Pa is in Canton, OH – over 400 miles away. Luckily, we’ll be able to watch the Philadelphia Stars via Fox, FS1 & NBC live broadcasts.
