Recently the space was closed by the city and is currently in the process of being rezoned, which could take several months. The fundraiser will go towards rent and utilities for the space as it’s being properly reconstructed up to code which includes electrical work for the space as well as fire proof curtains, a new door, and more sound proofing.
The philaMOCA is Housed in the historic Finney & Son building, a former showroom for mausoleums that dates back to 1865. Local music producer/DJ Diplo purchased the building in the mid-00’s and used it as the headquarters for his Mad Decent record label and the original home of the Mad Decent Block Party. In 2010, Diplo rented out the space to Gavin Hecker who established the PhilaMOCA in September of that year. Since 2012 the current Director/Curator Eric Bresler has taken over the reigns of the PhilaMOCA. Today, the multipurpose art space proudly showcases the best in underground, alternative, and DIY culture with a concentration on film and performance including art gallery shows, comedy acts, theatrical plays, film screenings and festivals, and rocking concerts with a wide spread of different music acts.
PhilaMOCA was named one of the “21 Ways Philadelphia is the Coolest City in America” by the Huffington Post and one of the “20 Best Things To Do in Philadelphia” by Time Out. Recently the space was used for the Eagles promotional video for this football season.
The PhilaMOCA is located at 531 N. 12th Street Philadelphia, PA 19123.
