St. Joseph’s Prep Crew To Compete in Prestigious Henley Royal Regatta in England
The St. Joseph’s Prep Varsity 8+ Crew is heading “across the pond” to England to compete in the Henley Royal Regatta against the world’s best rowers in the Princess Elizabeth Challenge Cup.
“The Henley Royal Regatta is the best-known and most prestigious regatta in the world and our young men have worked extremely hard to achieve this honor to compete,” says John Fife, a 1998 graduate of St. Joseph’s Prep in his sixth season as the program’s Head Coach.
The Prep’s V8+ is composed of students representing the entire Philadelphia region with the eight oarsmen and coxswain hailing from many different areas across the Delaware Valley:
Owen Finnerty, senior captain, Ardmore, PA ● Luke Helstrom, senior, Philadelphia, PA ● Luke Joseph, junior coxswain, Mickelton, NJ ● Owen McKenna, senior, Philadelphia, PA ● Braeden Montgomery, junior, Mickelton, NJ ● Gio Santaniello, junior, Churchville, PA ● Luke Smith, senior captain, Ambler, PA ● Philip Watson, junior, Haddonfield, NJ ● Maximus Wilson, senior, Media, PA ● (Alternate) Niko Haralambous, junior, Bensalem, PA ● (Alternate) R.J. Pelton, junior, Haddon Township, NJ
St. Joseph’s Prep has a long-standing history with the Henley Royal Regatta; this is the 14th time they have competed and are looking to bring home the cup for the second time (2000). This year’s squad is coming off a very successful season which included winning gold at the Stotesbury Cup Regatta in Philadelphia, the world’s oldest and largest high school rowing competition, as well as the program’s 43rd Philadelphia Catholic League Championship.
“Dedication and determination in both the classroom and on the water has provided these young men with an amazing opportunity,” says John Marinacci, President of St. Joseph’s Prep. “We are proud to support them as they represent our school, our city, and our country at this phenomenal event.”
St. Joseph’s Prep Crew will host a Send Off Party on Thursday, June 15 at 6 p.m at the Robert M. Gillin Jr. Boathouse, (2200 Kelly Drive, Philadelphia). Info: www.sjprep.org/henley-2023
