FLASHBACK: John O’Hurley Auditions to Play Bill Weston in the MMR Movie
John O’Hurley stopped by the studio ahead of the National Dog Show at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center this weekend, and it got us thinking about the last time he dropped by….
The moment was inspired by a segment we had day a few years earlier asking who would play each of us in a movie. In his casting of a WMMR movie, Preston’s pick to play our program director Bill Weston was none other than John O’Hurley. We asked the actor to a faux audition for the biographical fil, The Bill Weston Story: Soup, There It Is. John read lines written by Steve that were indicative of Bill to see if he was right for the part.
To get him started, Steve described Bill’s delivery as somewhere between John’s Seinfeld character J. Peterman and Ted Knight. To plenty of laughs, John nailed his reading, portraying Bill Weston as someone who questions firefighter donations, soup, guests on The Preston & Steve Show, and the overall antics of the show.
In a dramatic twist, the real-life Bill Weston confronted the man portraying him and the Preston & Steve crew after the interview. Bill was adamant that he is nothing like the crew makes him out to be. John’s humorous response upon meeting Bill was: “My god, it’s like looking in a mirror.”
Bill gave the crew a B+ for the interview. That’s better than a C+!
